National Arena League 3rd Round 9/12/17

IMG_6333Congratulations to our squad of swimmers who took part in the final round of this years National Arena League and came so close to winning promotion to the top division. Anaconda came third on the night and just four points seperated us from the runners up spot which would of seen us gain promotion.

There were plenty of fantastic performances in the pool and we had 28 podium finishes on the night. Tommy Donovan secured our first win of the night in the men’s 200IM in a time of 2:10.73 and went on to record a first place finish in the men’s 100m breaststroke in 1:05.15. Sadie Goldin stormed to victory in the 13/under 100m backstroke with a new PB 1:08.41. Alec Selwyn also clocked a new PB of 41.70  and gold in the 11/u boys 50m breaststroke. Elena Dewhurst (15/u) and Fred Goudie (open) both won their 100m freestyle events in 59.4 and 53.8 respectively.

Other first place finishes were secured in the relays where the club have been very strong this season. The girls 13/under squad were again very powerful and won both their relays. Sadie Goldin, Alice Bayley, Leto Atherton and Harriette Sebag-Montefiore tore it up in the 4×50 medley with a time of 2:09.75 and smashed it in the 4×50 free relay with 1:57.40. The Open mens squad were also very strong with Alan Smeets, Tommy Donovan, Anatoly Bugakov and Fred Goudie winning the 4×50 medley relay with a time of 1:47.64 and then the boys were joined by Luke Dudley and Wayne Lock to win the always fast and furious 6×50 free relay in a fast time of 2:28.33 to remain unbeaten in the relays all season! The boys 11/u squad of Taran Thomas, Alec Selwyn, Rocco Giustiniani and Cyril De Montbel won the 4×50 medley from the front in 2:29.63 and the girls 15/u 4×50 free relay squad of Alice Hockey, Sydney Celul, Dorothy Brock and Elena Dewhurst eased to victory in a time of 1:52.07.

Second place finishes were secured in the individual races by Sophia Bremen in the girls 11/u 50m breaststroke with 39.44, Sadie Goldin in the girls 13/u 100m free with 1:03.45 and Elena Dewhurst in the Women’s Open 100m free with 59.55. The girls relays had silver positions with the  11/u 4×50 medley squad of Mabel Hayes, Sophia Bremen, Evie Stansfield and Lily Waite in a time of 2:28.03 and the 15/u 4×50 medley with Sadie Wilson, Alice Hockey, Elena Dewhurst and Sydney Celul in a time of 2:06.87.

In individual events we had the following swimmers touch home in the bronze position. Mabel Hayes in the 11/u 50m backstroke (36.76), Alice Bayley in the 13/u 100m breaststroke (1:22.12), Jess Neale in the Womens Open 100m butterfly (1:09.43). Cyril De Montbel in both the 11/u 50m butterfly (36.76) and 50m freestyle (33.09), Noah Boydell in the 15/u 100m butterfly (1:05.66) and Ali Woolley in the 15/u 100m freestyle (59.03).

Third place place finishes were achieved in the following team relays, Girls 11/u 4×50 free, Evie Stansfield, Sophia Bremen, Mabel Hayes and Lily Waite with 2:13.19. Boys 11/u 4×50 free with Cyril De Montbel, Vincent Benedict, Rocco Giustiniani and Taran Thomas recording  a time of 2:15.06. The boys 15/u squad of Ali Woolley, Sam McAllister, Noah Boydell and Charlie Pliner posting 2:02.58 in the 4×50 medley relay and the Womens Open 4×50 medley squad of Charlotte Newman, Alice Hockey, Jess Neale and Elena Dewhurst hitting 2:03.51.

Head coach Wayne Lock said afterwards ” After narrowly missing promotion to the top division I was disappointed but certainly not with the efforts of the team. A couple of disqualifications cost us the difference which makes it a little more difficult to swallow. However, we improved on last year and there were many exceptional swims that I am extremely proud of. We’re confident we will have what it takes next year to be racing the best.”
