Posted on: October 17th, 2017 by John Donovan

The first round of this seasons National Arena League took place at the Glass Mill pool in Lewisham, where we competed against host club Saxon Crown, Brompton, Borough of Harrow, Dunmow Atlantis, Haringey Aquatics, Harpenden and Team Luton.

A depleted squad due to injury and withdrawals could not dampen the team spirit as the swimmers rose to the challenge and performed brilliantly on the night, finishing in 5th place and achieving 16 podium finishes in 9 individual events and 7 relays.

Tommy Donovan (16) was victorious in the individual  Open 200IM with a new club record (16yr & open) time of 2:11.57. Elena Dewhurst (14) also recorded a win and a new club record (14yr & open) in the Women’s Open 100m freestyle with 59.30. Sophia Bremen (11) won her 11/u 50m breaststroke race in a new PB time of 41.50.

Mabel Hayes (11) came home 2nd in the 11/u 50m backstroke in a PB time of 38.56. Evie Stansfield (11) also finished in a close 2nd place in the 11/u 50m fly with another PB of 35.87. Alec Selwyn (10) also came home in 2nd place in the 11/u 50m breaststroke with yet another PB 43.35. Tommy Donovan achieved a runners up spot in the Open 100m breaststroke with another PB and new club record time of 1:05.30.

To complete our individual podium finishes, Lily Waite  (11) grabbed 3rd place in the 11/u free with a PB 33.96. Taran Thomas (11) also came home in 3rd place in the 11/u 50m backstroke in 37.39.

The men’s open relay squad were dominant in winning both of their relays. Alan Smeets, Tommy, Anatoly Bugakov and Fred Goudie cruised home in the 4×50 medley in a time of 1:50.10 and in the very exciting  6x50m free finale, Alex Tegene, Luke Dudley, Tommy, Fred, Anatoly and Alan grabbed 1st spot on the touch in 2:29.30. Not to be outdone the girls 11/u 4x50m medley squad of Mabel Hayes, Sophia Bremen, Evie Stansfield and Lily Waite stormed to victory in a fast 2:33.53.

Runners up in their 4x50m medley were the boys 11/u squad of Taran Thomas, Alec Selwyn, Vinnie Benedict and Josh Lyttle in a time of 2:40.29. The girls 13/u squad of Alice Bayley, Jasmina Charap, Harriette Sebag-Montefiore and Lily Waite  finished a very creditable 3rd in their 4×50 medley in 2:21.35 as did the girls 15/u 4×50 medley squad , with Sadie Wilson, Mabli Elliman, Elena Dewhurst and Sydney  Celul posting a good time of 2:10.87. The women’s open  6×50 free squad of Emily Thomas, Dorothy Bbrock, Esme Llewellyn-Smith, Jess Neale, Sydney Celul and Elena Dewhurst also captured 3rd place in 2;54.33.

Head Coach Wayne Lock said after the evenings racing ” I was disapointed with 5th place but it was a brilliant team performance and not bad considering we were missing eight first team swimmers. Lily Waite was particularly amazing today stepping up to swim in the 13/u relay squads as an 11 year old and she didnt look out of place! Bring on the 2nd round in November.”

The club would like to thank Wayne, his  fellow coaches Joe Grubb and Harley Greer and all the swimmers who took part on the night. Big thanks also to Lesley who was our official.

**Date to remember, Saturday 11th November which is the 2nd round of the National Arena League and it would be great if a few more parents could come along to support the team**
